Two private parties have ownership here. When no one noticed, the place enjoyed its freedom for years. Suddenly, the owners had issues with each other and split it into two. In 2021, there was a period when this place was off-limits to visitors due to a court order. But the good news is, now it’s open again for you. If you ever wondered why those concrete posts and barbed wires destroy beauty, this is the reason behind it.

There’s a bunch of palm trees in a dome-shaped mound, kissing the sky. Guess what? Its height is just 4 meters above the sea. Is that all? Well, to make this place charming, the quantity and size did nothing. By comparison, only the quality matters. This place has a 360-degree scenic view, and the water is clear blue. It feels like the Coconut Tree Hill sunset in a different style here. Trust me, it’s beyond beautiful.

As I have mentioned earlier, the tiny space attracts every traveler around Mirissa like a destination magnet.

How do I get to Coconut Tree Hill, Mirissa?

Before the destination, I suggest walking around other nearby beach spots like Secret Beach and Parrot Rock. You’ll see a view of coconut trees, and you can follow the route. After all, it’s just a 15-minute walk from there. 

When you’re navigating with Google Maps, keep an eye out for a narrow road from the Galle-Matara main road. Look for the blue-colored letters on the wall that spell out Sunset Bar Mirissa. You’ll spot the trek path once you’ve passed the initial 50 meters. Direction boards are along the path to guide your way.

So, remember, this place is all about capturing fantastic photos. Now, if you’re after that dream shot everyone talks about, you’ve got a decision to make. Are you an early bird, or do you prefer the sun’s heat? After 9–10 a.m., this spot buzzes with travelers, all eyeing that one perfect coconut tree. It gets crowded, and lingering for that ideal shot becomes a bit tricky. My tip? Come before 9 a.m. to beat the crowd and get that perfect shot without breaking a sweat. Coconut Tree Hill sunrise waits for you too. Trust me, the heat later on might make you rethink things. Even during sunset, it can get pretty crowded, and the perfect shot might slip away.

All right. First things first. Google your posture, angle, or any filter you fancy. Since the coconut trees stand tall, step back a bit. That way, you’ll capture most of them and the grove too. As I hail from Matara, I know a lot of things about the place. There’s a trek, and the road is a bit rocky. Don’t wear flip-flops or sandals. Hard-soled shoes are the best for a solid grip. If you’re caught in the rain, the trek will be the worst thing in your life. Let me share a story. One of my foreign friends came here once, and she slipped and got her knee wounded during the trek. Those scratches and marks stuck around for quite a while. Finally, here’s a big no-no on climbing on the coconut trees. Unquestionably, you are not allowed to.
